The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration is seeking legal counsel after being ordered by the Central Administrative Court to pay damages to some victims of the 2009 Santika pub fire, a senior BMA official said yesterday.
“From next week, the BMA will be meeting counsellors from the Office of the Attorney-General [OAG] to discuss the facts and scrutinise the judges’ decision. The BMA cannot say if it will be able to pay the money to the victims in 30 days as mandated by the verdict,” said Somphak Sukanant, director of the BMA’s Law and Lawsuits Division.
Scrutiny by OAG, NACC
Deputy Bangkok governor Malinee Sukkhawejworrakit said immediately paying Bt795,600 in total to the five victims who took the city administration to court would subject the BMA to mandatory scrutiny from the OAG and the National Anti-Corruption Commission.
She said the BMA had already helped everyone affected by the fire, which took place in the early hours of 2009 New Year’s Day, killing 66 people and wounding 222 others.
However, she said, any additional assistance could only be given after Bangkok Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra’s approval. The governor is overseas at the moment.
“The BMA cannot simply give up on the matter without appealing against it, because if it does so, the two agencies will automatically start its scrutiny,” she added.
Tall buildings to be inspected
The BMA has dispatched a team of 99 inspectors to see if all tall buildings in the capital have complied with fire-safety measures, said Winai Liimsakul, director of the BMA’s Public Works Division. The inspection should be completed by October.
The Santika Club fire occurred in the early hours of January 1, 2009, ironically while a band called Burn was performing.
A total of 66 partygoers were killed and 222 others injured when flames swept through the nightclub. Many of the injured were foreigners.

Honda has unveiled its new Uni-Cub personal mobility device, an evolution of its 2009 U3-X device.
The Honda Uni-Cub is a compact individual transport device that offers users the same freedom of movement a person enjoys while walking but all from a comfortable saddle-style seat, thanks to Honda’s use of proprietary balance control technology and the world’s first omni-directional driving wheel system (Honda Omni Traction Drive System).
Honda says, “These technologies allow the rider to control speed, move in any direction, turn and stop, all simply by shifting his or her weight. Since the rider can freely move forward, backward, side-to-side and diagonally, he or she can quickly and easily manoeuvre among other people.”
The Uni-Cub is propelled by a Lithium-ion battery providing a maximum speed of 6km/h and a range of 6km. Anyone can ride the Uni-Cub provided they weigh between 40-100kg and are between 150-190cm tall.
Honda will conduct demonstration testing of the Uni-Cub with staff from Japan’s National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation from June 2012 until March 2013 with staff using the device for making their rounds and assisting the museum’s annual pass holders with test rides.
Electric individual mobility devices are now being seen in all shapes and sizes with the Smart eScooter and eBike and Audi’s e-bike concept all recently being exhibited.

After both “American Idol”s Jennifer Lopez and “The X Factor“s Britney Spears were slammed for their lack of qualifications by “America’s Got Talent”s newest judge Howard Stern, J.Lo has offered up some veteran advice for her future rival, who was officially announced as part of the Season 2 “X Factor” judges’ panel alongside fellow newcomer Demi Lovato yesterday (May 14).
“Just be yourself,” Lopez advised Britney via ET Online. “I think it’s just about really being your true self, not trying to be something that you’re not. I feel a little scared for them ’cause I was scared when I started,” J.Lo, who will soon wrap her second cycle as an “Idol” judge, admitted.
“It’s live TV. There’s a lot of pressure that goes with it, but I think they’ll do great,” she said, extending her well wishes to Lovato, as well. “They’ve both been in the spotlight since they were very young, so they’ll be fine.”

Is there anything that Jon Hamm is not awesome at doing? Probably not. Here he is giving advice to the readers of Rookie, courtesy of UPROXX. The man is a fantastic actor, and may just be the coolest guy on the planet. Even if he is a Cardinals fan, it’s impossible not to like the guy.

The “Mad Men” star is the latest celeb to take part in Rookie magazine‘s Ask a Grown Man series, in which guys (previous Grown Men include Paul Rudd and B.J. Novak) field questions about life, love and boys from teenage girls. You can watch Hamm’s video at the end of this post.
Sporting his post-season beard and a St. Louis Cardinals T-shirt, the one-time high school teacher offers advice that basically boils down to: Be yourself, and don’t worry too much about the little stuff. A sampling:
Is it gross if a girl accidentally farts in front of her significant other?
“I was under the impression girls never farted. … Farting is farting — everybody farts. Go read that book ‘Everybody Poops.’ It’s the same thing.”
My boyfriend isn’t interested in moving as fast as I am. Is there something wrong with him?
“If it’s making out — then he should want to do that. It’s super fun. If it’s having sex, then there’s other things to deal with, so he’s probably right in saying slow your roll. … Use your best judgment, or talk to somebody who has better judgment.”
Do guys get the same kind of stomach-knotting crushes girls do?
“The answer, quite simply, is absolutely. Because we’re human beings.”
Hamm closes by saying he hopes his answers helped a little. “I’m 41 years old. That doesn’t mean you have to pay attention to me, but it’s, you know, probably in your best interest. You’re probably all too young to watch ‘Mad Men,’ so, I don’t know, enjoy ‘The Hunger Games.’“
